Her publicist confirmed the news to CNN, saying that Cara had been battling health problems for some time.

The official cause of death for Fame icon Irene Cara was listed as arteriosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease in a Pinellas County, Florida medical examiner's report.

The outlet continued by pointing out that the Pinellas County medical examiner had noted in the medical records that she also had diabetes.

She was well-known for her work as a young actress and had her big break in the role of the made-up singer Coco Hernandez in the television series Fame.

She was 49 years old. Cara is best known for her roles in the 1980s including 'Flashdance', 'Fame' and 'Breakfast Club'. She also sang the Oscar-nominated song "Fame."
